  • Hi! My name is Sakuran. I am a fairy, and I watch over this cherry blossom tree. Every time a person’s wish is granted, a single blossom opens—and my job is to wait until the entire tree is in full bloom.

This may be sudden, but I have a question for you. Suppose that a person appeared who could materialize for you any sort of Japanese manga, anime, or video game merchandise that you wanted. What would you wish for?
  • You may wonder why I am asking this. It’s because a man came along and told me:

“I love Japanese anime, manga, and video games—and I REALLY love getting merchandise for them.
But it’s pretty hard to find what I want, so I was wondering about creating a place where not just myself but people from all over the world could buy whatever merchandise they wanted.”
  • I thought that was a wonderful idea.
I mean, if a place that could grant the wishes of a lot of people were created, then this tree would be in full bloom in no time! Plus, when I heard how this man wanted to

“save the manga, anime, and video game industry,”

I was right on board. What do all of you think? If you would Like, share, comment, and tweet your opinions, it’d make me very happy.Pleased to meet you. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
  • [JPY 2.5 trillion has been stolen]

Please listen. Listen to the cries for help from the creators of Japanese anime, manga, and games beloved throughout the world.
According to the Association of Japanese Animation, international sales for Japanese anime producers came to a total of JPY 14.4 billion in 2012.This is a drop of more than half since the peak of 31.3 billion in 2007 ※1 .
This is despite the fact that Japanese anime is hugely popular globally.
There s only one true reason for this drop: The widespread pirating of content. Japan s Agency for Cultural Affairs has stated that in major Chinese cities, Japanbased content has suffered approximately JPY 560 billion in yearly losses due to piracy (2012). In addition, even the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry couldn’t hide their surprise after discovering that online pirating of anime and manga in the U.S. amounted to damages of around a whopping JPY 2 trillion (2013) ※2 .
As a result of the damage caused by piracy, creators that have poured their heart and soul into work are unable to receive proper compensation for their work, and as such have become unable to create new content.

※1 quoted from “transition of Japanese anime market (industry and industrial) 2013 edition”, by the Association of Japanese Animations.

  • [I want to protect Japanese content from piracy]

I have witnessed many Japanese people, both adults and children, grow up enjoying many different manga, anime, and games. Of course, I myself greatly enjoy anime and manga as well (my absolute favorite work is Fullmetal Alchemist, by the way).
I have also heard through media and social networking services, as well as from overseas visitors to Japanese events, that these days, many people from other countries also love Japanese content. Despite these facts, I’m still not very optimistic about the future of Japanese content. The more the content becomes popular overseas, the more rightful compensation for Japanese producers and creators tends to be stolen away by piracy. I am truly saddened by the idea that Japan may stop producing anything new at all.

What do all of you think?

  • [The Sakuran Project will make all our hopes a reality]

We can’t just let things stay as they are. In Japan, both the public and private sectors have joined forces to protect content ※3. I also strongly wish to help, and have thought long about what I can do. Not just to protect creators here, but to bring happiness to everyone throughout the world who loves Japanese content. That’s exactly what the Sakuran Project aims to accomplish.
This project will make all our hopes a reality. We’ll gather ideas from fans of Japanese content around the globe about what sorts of things they would like to see produced. We’ll then take these ideas and commercialize them into real products. These will of course be officially licensed goods created with the permission of each content producer. The things you want will be made real. Creators will get their proper compensation. That’s what this project aims to achieve so that everyone can play a part in supporting Japanese content.

    [Sakuran Project

  • [Let’s start building a better future now]

It will probably take a while for piracy to go away for good. It’s hard to get rid of something completely. But I want to create a future in which more and more people make purchases through proper channels, leading to more and more new manga, anime, and games being created.

Will you join me on this project? Of course, making purchases using proper channels is essential, but participating in the Sakuran Project is also one way of supporting Japanese creators. I truly hope that you and those you care about will be able to enjoy wonderful Japanese content 10 and 20 years from now, and I want to create this kind of future.
Not just alone, but with all of your help.

  • [In Conclusion]

Thank you so much for reading this far. If you agree with what I had to say, I hope you’ll join me as a supporter of the Sakuran Project. I would love it if you could also introduce the Sakuran Project to people around you that you know love Japanese content. I truly believe that the bigger this project becomes, the more new services enjoyed by people around the world will be created.

Well then, Sakuran and I are looking forward to having you all join us on this project.
